More useful brands in an uncertain world
When familiar reference points start to blur, the value of a brand depends less on what it promises and more on what it genuinely makes simpler, clearer or more useful.
For a long time, brands were primarily considered territories of expression: a name, a set of signs, a narrative and a promise. That logic still matters, but it is no longer enough when audiences make more trade-offs, compare faster and tolerate the gap between words and actions less and less.
In this context, usefulness becomes a genuine driver of preference. Not usefulness in a purely functional sense. A useful brand can help people choose, understand, save time, remove friction, use a product better, access a service or simply make a decision more easily.
For companies, this changes the starting point. Instead of asking first, “What do we want to say?”, it becomes more valuable to ask, “What can we make simpler or more relevant for our audiences?” Communication comes afterwards, as the expression of value that can already be felt.
This is especially true in B2B. A clear platform, a simpler ordering tool, content that genuinely helps people make a decision or a service that removes a repetitive task can have more impact than a spectacular campaign disconnected from everyday reality.
Communication therefore becomes no less important. Its role changes. It makes usefulness visible, explains it, gives it form and connects it to a coherent brand experience. This is often where strategy, creativity, digital and experience stop being separate disciplines.
A useful brand does not have to be discreet. It can be ambitious, spectacular or emotional. But behind its expression, it always gives people a concrete reason to keep it in their lives.
